In Brief — Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Glass Onion is a fun movie, but the mystery began to seem less and less clever the farther I walked home from the theater. Benoit Blanc is an incredibly charismatic character (I could probably watch Daniel Craig do that for hours), and Edward Norton is a great cast, but Janelle Monáe’s character easily stole the show. The subversion of expectations, to be expected from the first film, were well done and the most fun part of the movie. And the peeling of the glass onion’s final layers in the last act was interesting and satisfying, but the actual mystery being explained in the end was less so. Its conclusions were all a bit too dumb, rather than being the clever machinations necessary for the format’s “aha” moment. Finally, the social commentary was very funny, but did not feel as complex as the first film (which I adored). Ultimately, though, I had a good time and would watch it again with some friends. I’d probably still give Rian Johnson one more movie to see if he can bring the magic back.
